Apologies for another email on a long day, but you may hear of this
recently reported and diagnosed issue with the first uses of newly updated
classrooms, for some (not all) Apple/Mac devices.

*What is happening?* A couple of reports of Apple/Mac projection issues in
classroom tests, the symptom being a green-coloured screen projection. Some
instructors who bring Apple/Mac devices for use in the new classroom may
experience this. (Note: Not unique to Apple/Mac, can occur with ATI
external graphics cards, but rare.)

*Why is this happening?* Cause found to be a content copyright protection
mechanism (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, HDCP) typically
enabled by default on Apple/Mac. (E.g., the iPad needs HDCP enabled.) Newer
systems in place in classrooms have HDCP available, when a system with HDCP
enabled detects this, it acts to protect content, resulting in the green
screen.

*What do instructors/IT support need to do? *For the immediate term, call
the number on the Registrar’s classroom podium help sheet, x33233.
Presentation technologies staff can disable the classroom HDCP system
setting remotely for the instructor. (It is “on” for copyright policy.) In
the next few days, an option will be available on the Touch Screen so
instructors can set it themselves at the start of class.

*Questions or concerns? *Please contact eclass at uwaterloo.ca.
