[MacTUG] Microsoft Remote Desktop 10

Hi Dani,

Nate and Keith worked together to determine that the source of the problem was the application. Version 8 worked fine, but version 10 was incompatible with our security standards for network ports (ARP rate limiting, to be specific). At the time, we decided that the workaround of using version 8 was a better path forward than loosening security controls.

At the end of October, I added ARP rate limit to our team meeting agenda. After reviewing additional research, we agreed to raise the limit based on my recommendation.

I changed the East Campus buildings and the CMH Residence building as a pilot. We will monitor and make adjustments as necessary.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Microsoft has fixed their broken app. At least I don’t see anything on their release notes page: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/clients/mac-whatsnew

Keith: Thanks for testing!

I’d be interested to hear your experience using 10.2.2 in any Cisco building thats not EC*

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dani,
I did a quick test this afternoon and the two problems that caused network problems (creating a new RDP profile and disconnecting from a RDP session) didn’t cause me to lose my wired network (due to the port being automatically disabled for 30 seconds due to excessive scanning) when I tried it today.

When I checked my Remote Desktop version it is now listed as 10.2.2 (1291). The version I was using when the problem was noticed was 10.1.8 (983).

I’ll do some more checking, but I’m cautiously optimistic.

Keith
