Hi, I found this out through experimentation for my daughter.

On the Mac you can mark up PowerPoint and PDFs like you had a pencil. 
It's very handy and you don't need any Adobe products.

1. Load the file into Preview(er), it can read PowerPoint, PDFs and 
several others.

2. If not in PDF already, save it as a PDF and open the PDF.

3. Get a $9 stylus from Staples if you don't already have one.  The 
MacBook trackpads supports rubber tipped capacitive stylii, no need for 
a separate pad.

4. Mark up the PDF at will.

5. Save PDF.
