*Financial support for students attending QIP 2019, Jan 14-18, 2019,
University of Colorado Boulder, USA*

Students have the chance to apply for financial support to attend QIP 2019.
There are two schemes of funding:

   - funding for US-based students (by the National Science Foundation)
   - funding for international students (by the local organizing committee)

The *deadline for both funding schemes is Monday, November 12, 2018.*
Decisions on what applications can be supported will be communicated by
November 16 (US-based students) and November 19 (international students).
Both dates are well before the early-bird registration deadline (to be
announced soon). We therefore ask all students applying for funding to *wait
with registering for the conference and booking accommodation until the
decisions have been communicated*.

Please read on for information on how to apply as a US-based student or as
an international student.

*US-based students*

QIP 2019 gratefully acknowledges travel support from NSF (grant CCF-1840547
<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1840547&HistoricalAwards=false>),
which will partially support the costs of traveling to and attending QIP
2019 in Boulder, Colorado, USA for US-based students with substantial need.
Grants will range up to approximately US $700, although the exact amount
awarded may vary depending on the number and needs of successful applicants.

To apply for funding, please fill out the online application form
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScyHfOnAGB1OgkizJpiZFuY95JjvhVvdSLR82uY0dcL5DJ1BQ/viewform?c=0&w=1&usp=mail_form_link>
by *Monday, November 12, 2018 (midnight, AoE timezone)*, according to the
following instructions:

In the form you will be asked to submit the following:

   - A brief two-sentence justification of need regarding funding.
   - A very brief resume indicating current position, highest degree
attained, prior publications, and how it connects to QIP.
   - A statement declaring gender and membership in an underrepresented
   group, if applicable.
   - A plan for securing additional funds to attend QIP 2019.
   - A supporting statement sent directly by the student’s referee (e.g.,
advisor) to xwu at cs.umd.edu, which should confirm the student’s
eligibility and commitment to the additional funding (if applicable) to
support the student’s attendance of QIP. This supporting statement should
be received by AoE, November 12, 2018 to make the application complete.

Preference will be given to applicants falling into one of the following
categories:

   - Authors/co-authors of accepted papers at QIP 2019 who otherwise do not
have the financial means to attend the conference.
   - Student applications which demonstrate a strong case for the benefits
   of their attending QIP 2019.
   - Participants from institutions typically not represented at QIP.
   - Applicants without previous NSF travel support from this type of QIP
   travel grant.

As an effort to diversify participants of QIP 2019, we reserve up to 20% of
the awards to applicants from underrepresented groups.

Applicants to receive the award will be selected by a committee comprised
of:

   - Xiaodi Wu (University of Maryland, College Park)
   - Felix Leditzky (University of Colorado, Boulder; local organizer)
   - Graeme Smith (University of Colorado, Boulder; chair of QIP steering
   committee and local organizer)

Important notes to applicants:

   - To be eligible, applicants must be based in the US, as per NSF policy.
   - Only flights on US carriers can be reimbursed.
   - Reimbursement for accommodation will be based on the expectation of
   shared accommodation.
   - The travel committee will communicate decisions on what applications
are supported by November 16, 2018.

*International students*
The local organizing committee reserved a portion of the conference budget
to support international students attending QIP. To apply for funding,
