[MacTUG] Things to Do

I emailed Luis at apple (CC’d) about migrating to ASM and he promptly called back! Thanks Luis!

In our conversation he clarified the process. It is really a 2 stage process and the first can happen now and is straightforward.

  1. We need to migrate to ASM. This is something we can do ourselves and is something Glenn (as the “super” admin) needs to do by just agreeing to the migration progress when he logs in. This part is quite straightforward and Luis says we should just do this on our own. It mainly involves clicking on the checkbox to start the migration.
  2. Once this is done we can then – as a separate step – migrate our assorted VPP accounts to the “Apps and Books” component of ASM. We can have more than one account in ASM for this – just as was the case for VPP and in some ways it sounds better suited for our somewhat decentralized management. We need to do this by Dec 1 as VPP will cease to exist. The big thing is we need to try to find all the VPP users out there – although we can only do so much in this regard. VPP pre-existed DEP (and apple’s use of an MDM) so there could be other VPP users out there above and beyond the half dozen or so that are currently part of DEP. When we have our list of VPP admins, Luis said he would be willing to come down to help migrate a few of them in, so we get the idea and then we can migrate the rest. But to repeat, this step can wait until we migrate into ASM.

Glenn, are you comfortable doing this? Do you want to bug Luis to ensure I am not simplifying the task or step 1? If you want I can do it with you so we have 2 sets of eyes when it happens, tho it sounds pretty straightforward

Yes Apple School Manager (vs business) is definitely the way to go. Regarding the migration I had emailed that Luis guy at apple to ask if he was able to help oversee the migration (he effectively offered to do so when he met with us) and I can do that again and am willing to help out otherwise. From what I remember it should be relatively painless for us to do since none of us (I believe) are using paid products on VPP. I think if we bought items from VPP it could be an issue (that would need the licenses to get transferred over). Glenn I am willing to help out in any way with regards to this.

RE SOP: I am willing to share my DEP documentation with others and put it (or at least a copy) in a common location when we determine this. I will need to organize it a bit first. I would prefer it on a centrally supported product (eg sharepoint) vs on someone’s server or wiki.

Lastly, Glenn I believe you set up a mailing list for Mac MDM related stuff. I am not sure if the list of interested parties was fully flushed out. Can I suggest people who are interested in being on this list email you and we can move this topic on to it? There are a lot of folks on Mactug that likely do not need/want to be bothered with DEP-related granular details of our migration etc.

Subject: [MacTUG] Things to Do

· centralized documentation for DEP
· migration to Apple School/Business Manager

Any progress on any of this?
I'm guessing School as opposed to Business. Disagreement?
