[MacTUG] UPDATE: Restoring services during extended MC power shutdown

What is happening? Due to the ongoing maintenance in MC, IST can activate only one of two power sources.



What does this mean? IST is cautiously restoring servers and virtual machines (VM’s) in MC, focusing on those deemed business critical.


When will my application be restored? As an app admin, you may submit a request to rt-IST-SAS at rt.uwaterloo.ca<mailto:rt-IST-SAS at rt.uwaterloo.ca> to have your application turned on. Alternatively, if you are an app admin with the ability to control your VM’s through vsphere, you may start your server at your convenience.



Note: all restored servers, VM’s and applications are dependent on a single power source. Should this power source fail, time may be required to restore the server to an operational state.



When will the second power sources be available? It is expected to be available Monday, September 10, at which point IST will begin to turn on remaining servers.

  *   If you have specific power-on instructions, please submit an RT to rt-IST-SAS at rt.uwaterloo.ca<mailto:rt-IST-SAS at rt.uwaterloo.ca>.
  *   If there is a machine you no longer require/does not need to be turned back on, please submit an RT to rt-IST-SAS at rt.uwaterloo.ca<mailto:rt-IST-SAS at rt.uwaterloo.ca>.

UPDATE: The timeline for the MC power shutdown has been extended:

  *   The power will be shut down in the MC building from Tuesday, August 21 until Friday, August 31.
  *   Network core redundancy will be restored on Friday, August 31 and base infrastructure for servers will be gradually restored.
  *   The servers in MC and services are expected to be fully restored by end of day Tuesday, September 4.
  *   Plant Operations will be announcing the dates and times for the additional building outages. Please note, the network will be unavailable within these buildings during the outages.

Reminder: During the shutdown period, impacted services will be running without redundancy.

REMINDER: Plant Operations will be shutting down the power in MC from Tuesday, August 21 to Wednesday, August 29. In preparation for this shutdown, IST will begin shutting down servers and virtual machines housed in MC on Friday, August 17. Services are expected to be restored by Friday, August 31.

Delivery of IT services during the shutdown

  *   IT services deemed “business critical<https://uwaterloo.ca/information-systems-technology/services/business-critical-services>” (as noted on the IST website) will remain available
  *   External and internal connectivity will function at full capacity and Internet access will not be affected (one external router will be supported by generator power)
  *   View the list of IT services provided by IST that will be unavailable during the shutdown period at https://uwaterloo.ca/information-systems-technology/services-unavailable-during-mc-power-shutdown

Important note: Not all single instance VMs can be accommodated in East Campus 2 (EC2) during the shutdown. IST is acquiring a list of mission critical VMs and will do their best to accommodate them.

Subject: [Isthd] IMPORTANT: Significant interruption to service delivery due to power shutdown in MC Building - August 21-24

Please note: The dates and times of this work have the potential to change. IST will confirm the timeline and provide detail on the services impacted soon.

What is happening? Plant Operations will be turning off the power in the Mathematics & Computer (MC) Building from Tuesday, August 21 to Friday, August 24 for building maintenance. This shutdown will affect the IST data center and core, wireless, and distribution networking equipment located in MC.

What is the impact? Some information systems and services will not be available during this shutdown. IST is working with application owners to determine the list of impacted services. Some of the services that will be impacted include:

  *   The data centers and core network will be operating without redundancy
  *   Wireless will be operating without redundancy
  *   Internet connectivity on campus will be operating with reduced bandwidth and without redundancy

When is this happening? Tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, August 21 to Friday, August 24. The dates and times of this work have the potential to change.

Additional power outages: The following buildings will each have individual, one day power outages (details to be confirmed) during this period (Note: the network will be unavailable within these buildings during the outages):

  *   Math 3 (M3)
  *   General Services Complex (GSC) including the Commissary (COM) and Central Services Building (CSB)
  *   Davis Centre (DC)
  *   Chemistry 2 (C2)
