If you are doing a clean install on a fresh image, that is,

install Office_Mac_Standard_2016_MultiLang_-9_.dmg_MLF_X21-58282.ISO

from the IST Webstore dated Nov 2017 (I'm using a 10.13.5 macOS) and then run MAU 3.9.2

and upgrade it to 4.0.0. After that, it will list all 5 apps that need updates without running them.

It also offers to Enable Automatic Updates.

cd /Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft\ AutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS/

./msupdate --list

Checking for updates...

Updates available:

  ONMC15  OneNote Update 16.14.1 (18061302)

  MSWD15  Word Update 16.14.1 (18061302)

  XCEL15  Excel Update 16.14.1 (18061302)

  PPT315  PowerPoint Update 16.14.1 (18061302)

  OPIM15  Outlook Update 16.14.1 (18061302)

It will also do Skype for Business updates but apparently not Skype, Silverlight, or MRD

  MSFB16 Skype For Business Update 16.18.51

Unsuccessful at figuring out where the Automatically Download and Install is recorded.

As part of releasing Microsoft Office 2016 15.27, Microsoft has also updated Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) to include an interesting new feature: Automatically Download and Install. In MAU 3.8 and lat…

# defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.autoupdate2 HowToCheck

AutomaticDownload

but I thought they were centralizing that as a system option.
An option to msupdate to actually configure it would be nice but you can read it.

# ./msupdate --config

Checking configuration...

    ChannelName = Production;

    HowToCheck = AutomaticDownload;

Subject: [MacTUG] Commandline Microsoft Autoupdate

Dani pointed out that there is a commandline interface for Microsoft update

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/mac/update-office-for-mac-using-msupdate

I have confirmed what he has pointed out that it still (even after the update to AutoUpdate 4) that it seems to need to have the apps run first before it will recognize that there are updates. But it is nice to have it scriptable nonetheless

cd /Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft\ AutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS

./msupdate --list
