Dani pointed out that there is a commandline interface for Microsoft update

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/mac/update-office-for-mac-using-msupdate

I have confirmed what he has pointed out that it still (even after the update to AutoUpdate 4) that it seems to need to have the apps run first before it will recognize that there are updates. But it is nice to have it scriptable nonetheless

cd /Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft\ AutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS

./msupdate --list

Checking for updates...

No updates available
