[MacTUG] Apple statement regarding APFS in macOS High Sierra

Hi Glen,

I think what it means is by default SSD’s will get APFS, however it is still possible to install HS with APFS on an HDD by doing a clean install. The option to convert the drive to APFS was disabled for me when I did an upgrade from Sierra.

Haha, I don’t think of it as “out of luck” glen but more “we get to keep what we know” as long as we continue to use old hard drive technology! ;-) I am speaking as a “fuddy duddy” administrator that needs to deploy images to computers and APFS could make that a bit more complicated. (I can see the need to replace HFS, which is quite old and not optimized for new drive technologies, encryption, etc. But that will make it harder for us in certain deployment scenarios)

"Apple File System (APFS) is the default file system in macOS High Sierra for Mac computers with all-flash storage. APFS features strong encryption, space sharing, snapshots, fast directory sizing, and improved file system fundamentals.

When you install macOS High Sierra on the built-in solid-state drive (SSD) of a Mac, that drive is automatically converted to APFS. Fusion Drives and hard disk drives (HDDs) aren't converted. You can't opt out of the transition to APFS.”

So it sounds like one will only get the new APFS file system if one has an SSD drive, and is out of luck if one has a Fusion or HDD drive.
