Use the defaults command on the client Mac

The same setting can also be configured via the command line:

  1. Make sure System Preferences is not open.
  2. Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities).
  3. Optionally, to see the current setting, execute this command:

    sudo defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLN=
AME

A value of 0 (FALSE) indicates "List of users" is the current setting.
A value of 1 (TRUE) indicates "Name and password" is the current setting.

  4. To use the "Name and password" setting, execute this command:

    sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULL=
NAME -bool TRUE

  5. Log out to verify the login window is configured correctly.
