[MacTUG] OS X 10.6.6 Preview save issue

Briefly, here is the problem. If I open a .tiff file in preview and then save it back out ( using Save As under file) as .tiff ( originally there was some editing done, but that doesn't have any effect on the problem ) or as a .psd or .png the image is lost and one ends up with what appears to be a grey/transparent image. Saving it as a .jpg seems to work.
