[MacTUG] Managing Mac Fleet

So I just asked Sarah M if we can put this on the next CTSC agenda.

Trevor, where did you hear that InTune will be a “windows first” adventure? For those not in the loop that may seem like a dumb question as InTune is made my Microsoft and was developed to manage and eventually replace SCCM. But, (as Lowell knows from some talks with folks on other campuses, via a CUCCIO discussion group), some places are using it for Macs first! The rationale is interesting: While InTune is being developed to replace SCCM, it is far from having its feature-set filled out to keep most SCCM admins happy. Now the feature set for macs or mobile devices is not filled out any more than it is for managing windows (in fact it is likely even less filled out). HOWEVER, if you are org that has a good option for managing Windows computers (SCCM) but NO solution for managing Macs, all of a sudden InTune seems like a good solution for the macs 😉

I think we need to get these talks going again (says the guy who is retiring soon, hahaahahaha)

We had a solution with the SCCM-integrated Parallels Mac Management so we really miss at least being able to track what is out there so we can reach out and be proactive.

We are trying to wait for InTune - it’s getting difficult. It appears that InTune at UW will be a Windows-first implementation so I would say it is still a (long) while before Mac management on that platform is available to us.

Yesterday, I resumed my search for something, anything, we could use to fill the gap. JAMF is the premium solution but I am not sure it’s worth the investment in time and funds to set up if our longer term plan is to use InTune.

Would the people with solutions maybe give us a ballpark for pricing?

CSCF and MFCF use Jamf Pro.

Although I think MFCF might still be hosting their MDM on premises whereas CSCF has moved out Jamf Pro instance to Jamf Cloud.

We aren't using anything atm. Waiting for InTune to see what it does. I know other units are using jamf and munky.

Hey Folks,

I’m a Senior System Administrator from the Library. Recently we’ve noticed an increase in requests for Mac machines and this has raised the need for a solution to manage them. I’m curious what other groups are using from an administrative perspective to keep Software and Core OS patches up to date. Feel free to suggest any solutions you are using.

Regards,
Shiv Patel
