I just read this entry

Mac users couldn’t launch apps this afternoon after Apple verification server issue<https://verge.cmail19.com/t/d-l-cdivz-bjdkrtjz-n/>. Quite a remarkable thing that happened! The idea that you can’t launch the apps you downloaded on your computer because they can’t check in with Apple to see if they’re okay is, well, it’s a thing. The fact that this thing involves software literally called “Gatekeeper” really does hit on the nose, don’t it.

I could have many emotions about owning and controlling the computer you paid money for (and I do) and further emotions about whether and when it’s appropriate for Apple to require code signing and other safety checks on Macs (and I do). Instead, I will just point out that these failures were egregious because when they happened, our Macs didn’t tell us why things were broken. There was no clear indication of what was wrong nor was there an elegant fallback solution.

Things just mysteriously broke. The irony is that they mysteriously broke because Apple didn’t sufficiently think through the mechanism that was design to protect the Apple ethos of ensuring bad things don’t mysteriously break your computer.

Though I have Big Sur running on an older test mac mini, I am hesitant to install it on my older office Macbook - even if it is 11.0.1

I am still running Safari Version 14.0 (15610.1.28.1.9, 15610).

I've been running the Big Sur beta since the very beginning, and AnyConnect
complained but worked. The warning was that it would stop working at some point.

Oh, no. The Cisco support site is lighting up with folks having
issues under Big Sur and certain versions of AnyConnect. Folks
are suggesting removing the 4.9 client then install an older client
then let it upgrade itself to get it working again. We are running
4.8 ...

My laptop has just reboot and is installing Big Sur (non-beta).
So, I'll follow-up in 30-ish min.

Anybody know if the Cisco AnyConnect client works? I know that under Catalina there is a warning that it will not work under future release. The future may be here.

This morning one of my Mac notified me that there was an update and asked if I wanted to install it now or later.

When I went to check the update, I see that Apple is offering to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, see screen capture.

The update that I think it was asking me about is the another update, Safari 14.0.1
