[MacTUG] Now that "Back to my Mac" is gone, how are you advising users to remotely connect to their Macs

You don’t need the full ARD client to connect using the ARD protocol. The Screen Sharing app uses the ARD protocol without all of the extra bells and whistles that the Apple Remote Desktop app provides (basically the ability to control multiple machines at once).

Using ARD/Screen Sharing also allows the user to share their clipboard between the remote and target Mac. I would recommend it against VNC.

Considering ARD is like considering Photoshop for cropping and rotation.

In Terminal, you can "open vnc://127.0.0.1" or in Connect to Server "vnc://127.0.0.1".

Of course you'll need to do the VPN from off-campus and set things for specific users in Sharing > Remote Management.

I always have the discussion whether they just need their files not the GUI since their files should be stored on the file server.

Hi,

With Apple’s “Back to my Mac” gone, I am wondering how people setup users so that they can remotely connect to their Macs on campus.

I know one option is Apple’s Remote Desktop but that cost $$$

Thanks,

Glenn
