Having said that, with my latest experience with High Sierra (where it whalloped an SSD hard drive and royally buggered up some stuff) I will avoid high sierra until I can’t!

BTW I did leave one of my servers upgraded to time machine. I panicked at first as it was mainly a Fileserving & Time Machine server and I could not find these settings in the Sever App. I guess the good news is that this is just controlled by the File Sharing settings in “Sharing” sys prefs. Time machine is really hidden (you have to right click on the share and choose advanced options). However, trying to  be optimistic about it, it looks like you do not need to buy Server if all you want to do is use your mac for file sharing or Time machine!
