[MacTUG] Alert beeps not working

End users tend to be running latest 10.10 and notice it through Outlook 2011
but the Sys Pref > Sound also doesn't generate anything.
YouTube is fine so not complete audio failure.
Manipulating ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemsound.plist doesn't seem to help.
Ideas?
