Microsoft has released an update, 14.5.6, for Office 2011 for the Mac to fix the compatibility problems with the newest Mac OS X ( El Capitan ), resulting in Outlook hanging see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3098396. No update yet for Office 2016.
