"Yosemite LoginLockout” is what it this issue is being called.

There are 2 ways to fix it.

  1. A little script placed in /etc resolves the issue and does not seem to cause any issues (other than a longer boot time). I have confirmed that it works on a problematic machine. While Dani mentioned it, more info is available here: http://www.enterpriseosx.com/yosemite-loginlockout-bug/
  2. 10.10.3 seems to solve the problem as well. I have upgraded a problematic machine and it resolves things.

I am not quite ready to upgrade my lab to 10.10.3 so I am going to just use the script for the time being until I test 10.10.3 a bit more (to confirm it is totally fixing it and not bringing new troubles into the mix) and then upgrade the OS and remove the script (as it will not be needed by then).

This is a site that states that 10.10.3 resolves the issue: https://osxbytes.wordpress.com/2015/03/12/jettisoning-the-bootcache/

And here is the apple site for the 10.10.3 update that states that this update "Addresses an issue that could cause Macs bound to an Active Directory server to become unresponsive at startup”: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204490
