Did not see this in our testing. Webstore and Composer (JAMF/Casper Suite).

The Volume Licensing copy should not *require* a Microsoft account, although it will certainly make use of one if you have one.

However, the 2016 VL installer contains a postinstall script that kicks off "Microsoft Office Setup Assistant" as the current user. If you attempt to deploy the software any way (Apple Remote Desktop, Casper, Munki, etc.) other than an actual, interactive execution of the GUI installer, that Setup Assistant never launches. It is that program that creates a .plist that contains the license code for the software. If that plist isn't created, the software will then default to an unlicensed state and require a Microsoft account sign-in every launch.

There is much discussion about this going on, and some workarounds to allow deployment of the software. Some good sources to look for answers include Jamf Nation (http://jamfnation.jamfsoftware.com), the Mac Enterprise listserv (http://www.macenterprise.org/mailing-list) or the #Microsoft-Office channel on the MacAdmins Slack (https://macadmins.herokuapp.com/ for an invite).

Does anyone know if/when a “standalone” version is due?

I was digging around in the Microsoft Volume License Center this morning and found the Office 2016 for Mac ISO available for download. The naming convention is slightly different from 2011, so watch how you search.

Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac Standard
vs.
Office for Mac Standard 2011
