The standard for site naming is to use the full format.
However, you can easily ask for a site alias and since
this is a well known campus identity, there should be
absolutely no reluctance getting it.  Someone just
needs to put in an RT to IST ...

I have one suggestion - could we make the published URL: https://pilots.uwaterloo.ca/mactug    ?

The name is pretty distinct  and unlikely to collide with some other group on campus.  I find the trend to long URLs not helpful.  The compensation of using bit.ly URLs seems less than ideal.  I realize that this wasn't necessarily your choice but I would push for the short URL.  Much easier to publish and type into a smartphone.
