[MacTUG] Network cards seeming to go bad

I've had two very different models of MacBook Pro deciding that
the Ethernet cable is no longer connected.

The fix is nuking:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist 
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist 

Reboot and then recreate Ethernet settings. 
One of my clients claims I did that before.
Anyone else been running into this?
