The question of how much memory one can put into the base model 21.5" iMac came up at MacTUG.

With the base model, Apple will allow one to upgrade from the 4GB base to 8 GB ( cost of $210). Note, with other iMac models Apple does also allow for a 16 GB memory upgrade ( cost of $630).

------

However, all the iMac's can be upgraded to 32 GB of RAM ( if you have the money ).

If you check Apple 3rd party memory supplies, such as OWC you will see this.

---------------

The memory prices from OWC or other 3rd party supplies is much lower…

8 GB of RAM ( 2 x 4GB) from OWC is $48.79 vs $200 for Apple's update.

Note: For the lab, you would really only need half the number of upgrades as iMacs, as when you upgrade an iMac to 8 GB, you could take the 4 GB that came with it and put it into a second iMac bringing it up to 8 GB.

Or you could upgrade all the iMac to 12 GB if memory was important.

While I wouldn't advise this, you could also go with 4 GB ( 2 x 2GB) upgrades for all the iMac's to bring them up to 8 GB. The cost for this would be $26.79
