Thanks Steve.

I think that answered my question and I believe it confirms my thoughts.

I know it can be set to different resolutions, but basically that 1680x1050 in your example is just interpolating the image of 1440x900 —  to quote you "In other words mirroring is mirroring"

This is what I had thought all along, it was the strong certainty of my client who was 100% sure that 'things were different' before Xmas and that she was having it be mirrored and at the same time having the "full real resolution" -- it sounds like getting something for nothing, haha.

She kind of wore my certainty down on a Friday and I thought I would float it out there in case Apple had figured out a way to get around the rules of Cartesian Geometry, haha!

In screen mirroring the screen can be set to different resolutions.

The image will fill the large display but you get resolution of the smaller display just zoomed in slightly if you will.  Similar"sort of" to screen zooming (option-key and scroll on mouse or trackpad).
In other words mirroring is mirroring. Same information on both displays.  As you can see from this image (Setting pictured above) it the exact same image but external is a larger display.

To actually have full real resolution on both displays you have to turn off mirroring and set resolution separately.  You can play with the arrangement. Even have external monitor be main screen when connected and have identical background screens.

I suspect she had the main monitor be external display with internal being secondary display.

My user has a Cinema Display hooked up to a Macbook Pro. So we have have a much higher resolution display hooked up to a laptop.

Her argument sounds convincing:
1) She had the row of folders on her monitor's desktop -- that sounds like it was set to mirror (but not the only way this could occur)
2) The row of folders was only a partial row on the monitor, but was a row and a half on her macbook
3) The same image was on both displays

Now I can more or less replicate this by having the displays not be mirrored, and setting the Cinema display to be the main display (have the menu bar be on the Cinema display). This lets the display run in high resolution. The only issue is that she claims that the display is that the display is showing a different image than the laptop image. This is a triviality that I am sure she can live with (solution, reset the background!!) but the issue is that she still is convinced that she had her laptop set to mirror and at the same time have the Cinema display natively display in its 1900 pixel wide glory!

Am I missing something here?? (Other than a Cinema display on my desktop, haha)
