[MacTUG] Office 2011 requires intel processor

Yep... Apple has moved on.

I was really disappointed when Snow Leopard was not available for my
PowerBook (purchased just before the move to Intel). My PowerBook must
have seen the writing on the wall because it died a couple of months later
and now the family shares a MacBook Pro.

Yesterday I installed Office 2011 Academic Version on the family MacBook
Pro and it really looks and feels like Outlook 2010 on my Windows machine
here at work. (It's not available on-campus yet, I had to purchase online
as this is a non-UW Mac). You can set your Out of Office and the
configuration is a snap (as long as you put your email as
username at connect.uwaterloo.ca).

One limitation caught me by surprise... you can't create or edit
server-based rules with Outlook 2011 - you have to use the web client
(OWA). From what I've been reading, it's a limitation within EWS that
Microsoft has on their "To Do" list.

And... the junk email settings don't appear to be shared between OWA,
Outlook 2011 (Mac) and my Outlook 2010 (Windows)

Thanks for pointing it out Glenn. Well that is interesting, but it
certainly
not that unexpected, after all, even apple as abandoned developing new
stuff
(eg Snow Leopard) for the PowerPC. To be fair, the first intel macs are
almost 5 years old.

For these users, they will be limited to the web version, which for the
average user should be sufficient -- in fact Will is teaching people to use
the calendar (partly due to the wide range of client apps that people could
use to access it). The question is if there are any power users out there
running a G5 or earlier. We have one (Mary, who I have CC'd, I mean Anne
Wagland), and I have been looking for a good reason to get her Mac
replaced.

Steve, if your reading, I guess our use of a Microsoft package may be
resulting in a few mac sales, haha ;-)
