Dear WiM Faculty,

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer. Whether traveling, camping or
just staying around. I have two items on the agenda that need your
attention:

   - As promised before and based on the poll results collected earlier in
June, we have scheduled a get together lunch for *Monday, July 29, 12:00
   – 1:30pm @MC 5479. *

If you planning to attend please fill out this form
<https://forms.gle/1puqna95ZgGwrHe1A>, so we can arrange for food
accordingly. Those who answered the poll, must have automatically gotten a
calendar invitation too. I would appreciate it if you re-confirm and point
out your dietary restrictions, if you have any.

   - Next, you may have heard that this year NSERC has made a grant
announcement for science promotion (see below my message). I wanted to
pick your brain on whether this is something WiM should consider applying.
Here are some of the initiatives that WiM committee could possibly pursue,
   given financial support:
      - Financial support for our female students, postdocs or faculty to
travel and participate in Math conferences and workshops across canada or
      worldwide.
      - Covering registration fees and local expenses for underprivileged
female students from across canada who like to participate the events
organized by Math faculty at university of Waterloo.
      - A Lounge/Office to provide some logistic support for Women in Math.
The uses for this space include: networking space, a safe study space,
lactation room, meetings and organizations, etc.
      - Organizing a ``Women in Math Canada" Conference, similar to ``Grace
Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing" or the ``Women in
Physics Canada
      Conference".
      - A part time or full time staff.
      - And of course Financial support for our other events which
encourage and advocate for women who are interested in studying
mathematics
and who seek careers in mathematics.

The Caveat is that, faculty of Math can only put forward one proposal
depending on the priorities. So before I proceed to writing a proposal, I
prefer to gauge the interests and support for Women in Math issues. I
would appreciate any feedback, you have on this and also whether you have
any interest to be involved in writing the proposal or implementing it
after, assuming we get the grant.
 Cheers,

Ghazal

Take advantage of the following great opportunities from the Natural
Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

*NSERC Award for Science Promotion*

The NSERC Awards for Science Promotion honour individuals and groups who
make an outstanding contribution to the promotion of science in Canada
through activities encouraging popular interest in science or developing
science abilities. Two recipients (one individual and one group) may be
selected for the awards each year.

*Nomination deadline: November 25, 2019*

*NSERC PromoScience Grant*

NSERC invites applications that promote the natural sciences and
engineering to Canada’'s young people, particularly to groups such as girls
and Indigenous peoples that are under-represented in scientific and
engineering careers. PromoScience supports activities and content designed
for youth in elementary school, high school (including those in the
equivalent first year of college in Quebec), their teachers, and activities
that will encourage Indigenous undergraduate students to pursue graduate
studies in natural sciences and engineering.

*New this year*: The maximum allowable request is $200,000/year for 3 years,
and only one application may be submitted per organization or faculty per
competition year.

Watch your inbox for notice of a webinar for applicants which will take
place in mid-July.

*Application deadline: September 15, 2019*
