Mathematics is a powerful tool, and diversity among mathematicians increases the potential for positive impact. The Women in Mathematics (WiM) committee exists to encourage and advocate for women* who are interested in studying mathematics and who seek careers in mathematics. The committee engages with cultural and institutional reasons for under-representation, and strives for all genders to be well-represented in mathematics. See https://uwaterloo.ca/women-in-mathematics/
 and https://www.facebook.com/womeninmath/ for more information.

What’s involved

Serving on the Women in Mathematics committee entails:

  * Attending approximately one meeting per term
  * Assisting with some brainstorming, organizing and running of some of our events:
     * Welcome events for undergrads and for grads/post-docs/faculty (September)
     *   soft skills workshops
     *   alumna career panel (March)
     *   research talks
     *   events with local businesses
  * Special projects such as nominating women for awards or opportunities, responding to current issues on campus.
  * Providing feedback on issues and initiatives as they arise in meetings and via email.

A typical term is 2-3 years.

How to Apply

The WiM committee values the benefits and strengths of diversity. We aim for broad representation among departments of the math faculty, among positions (undergrad, grad student, post-doc, faculty, etc.), among under-represented genders, and among many other aspects of identity that may intersect with your experience as a woman* in mathematics.

To apply, please submit a short statement describing your interest in WiM to the committee chair, Judith Koeller (jakoelle at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:jakoelle at uwaterloo.ca>) by August 15, 2018.

*Who Does Women in Math support?

Many of WiM’s events are open to all genders.

Currently, females are under-represented in mathematics, as shown in these gender statistics<https://uwaterloo.ca/women-in-mathematics/representation-gender>.

Following the lead of University of Waterloo<https://uwaterloo.ca/stories/university-application-forms-change-transgender-students>, WiM recognizes those whose gender identity is neither male nor female, including gender-fluid, non-binary, agender and more. oSTEM<https://www.ostem.org/> indicates that these gender identities are under-represented in STEM fields. WiM advocates for representation of all genders in mathematics, and welcomes people with under-represented gender identities to all of our events.
