[Faccus] Potential issue with @edu.uwaterloo.ca email delivery from private networks

What is happening? As undergraduate students move to the EDU email domain, devices such as scanners and printers which have the functionality to send emails, and belong to a private subnet, will not be able to forward emails to @edu.uwaterloo.ca accounts. This is because, by design, private subnets are separated from the outside world. Since @edu.uwaterloo.ca is a Microsoft system external to the University, it is unreachable.
Who does this impact? Many undergraduate students are already using @edu.uwaterloo.ca email accounts. As of April 25 all undergraduate students will be migrated to @edu.uwaterloo.ca.
What you can do to resolve it: Any device on a private subnet that sends email must authenticate using a "service account" to a designated IST mail relay server. IST will grant the service account permission to the mail system upon request. Some older devices may not support SSL/TLS and cannot be configured to authenticate. These will be restricted to sending email to on campus accounts only.
Questions or concerns? Please contact the IST Service Desk, 519-888-4567, ext. 44357, or helpdesk at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:helpdesk at uwaterloo.ca>.
