What is happening? A data breach at Dropbox has made some University of Waterloo staff, faculty and/or student email and password details public. IST’s Information Security Services (ISS) team has been in contact (via email from Mark Gaulton, soc at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:soc at uwaterloo.ca>) to alert these individuals of the breach, and encourage them to change their Dropbox password, especially if that password is also used for accessing a University service/application.
This breach affects Dropbox users who created their accounts before mid-2012, and who have not changed their password since.
What should you do to protect yourself? If you have used your UWaterloo email address and WatIAM password to set up a Dropbox account, please immediately log in and change your Dropbox password. Please also consider any other service or account configured using your UWaterloo email address and password and update those respective passwords as well. It is recommended that you use a different password for each service that requires a login.
Questions or concerns? Contact IST Information Security Services – Security Operations Centre, soc at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:soc at uwaterloo.ca> or ext. 41125
