What is being done? IST is further securing email sent via Connect.

Why is it being done? To help prevent misuse of the Connect email service.

Who will it impact? Any user or automated system configured to send or relay email using a direct, unauthenticated SMTP connection to Connect.

Who will not be impacted? Users using standard configurations that login to the SMTP server to send email. Users using Outlook 2010/2013 with an MAPI connection, mobile devices using ActiveSync, Mac mail and Mac Outlook using EWS connections (these are always authenticated).

What will happen to misconfigured clients? Email will not be sent or forwarded and the email client may display an error message.

What must be done? Use MAPI, or EWS for clients that are capable. Configure outbound email to authenticate with a user name and password before sending.

Questions or concerns? Please contact the IST Service Desk, helpdesk at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:helpdesk at uwaterloo.ca> or ext. 44357.
