What is happening? NetApp servers will be updated resulting in several short outages (2 minutes or less) over a period of approximately 2 hours.

When is this happening? Wednesday August 27, between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

Why is this happening? The NetApp servers providing file sharing service to the campus have a software defect that is causing performance degradation which affects the Virtual Machines (VMs) running many campus services. As this affects so many services, this has been tagged as critical and scheduled for the earliest date possible taking into account existing University deadlines and business processes (see additional information below).

What is the impact? There will be several short outages (2 minutes or less) over a period of approximately 2 hours. These short outages will affect many services across campus causing brief pauses in access. Automated processes scheduled to occur during the upgrade window should be rescheduled or monitored closely for connection issues (e.g. MATLAB). Student, faculty and staff "N" and "R" drives as well as roaming profiles will experience brief loss of connection.

Note: Although we don’t anticipate any issues with this upgrade please be aware that if problems occur the back out process could take several hours.

Additional information: The performance degradation issue needs to be addressed as it impacts 200+ production servers/services. While a work-around to address the issue has been put in place, it cannot be sustained until the next end-of-term maintenance window. Given the nature and scope of NetApp use, maintenance between academic terms is preferred to minimize the impact on students and faculty. This would normally be scheduled on a weekend, however, Monday is a registration (fees) deadline so a potential outage this weekend is deemed unacceptable as is an outage next weekend when Housing and Residences is assisting students arriving on campus and will require access to services and resources.
