Welcome, artists! We look forward to reviewing your artwork for the 2013 Joint Mathematics Meetings Exhibition of Mathematical Art, to be held in San Diego, California, January 9-12, 2013. For more information on the meeting, please visit http://jointmathematicsmeetings.org/jmm.

This exhibition will be held in Exhibit Hall B of the San Diego Convention Center. Over five thousand professional mathematicians typically attend this meeting, so this is an excellent opportunity to get your work seen by people who will appreciate it. Past exhibitions have been very well received, and the AMS and MAA feel the art exhibition has become a valuable addition to the meeting.

We plan to publish a catalog to accompany the exhibition. SIGMAA-ARTS, a special interest group of the MAA, has generously offered to underwrite the cost of doing so, as they did last year.

For the fifth year, there will be cash awards picked by a panel of judges that is different and independent from the panel of jurors that select the artworks. The awards will be a bit different this year, with a $400 award for best photograph, painting, or print, a second $400 award for best textile, sculpture, or other medium, and a $200 honorable mention award. The judges will base their decisions for awards on five areas: 1) Mathematical depth and sophistication, 2) Craftsmanship, 3) Aesthetic appeal, 4) Originality and innovation, and 5) Overall interest.

All of the information contained in this e-mail can be seen by clicking on "Art Exhibit Submission Instructions" on the submissions website: http://gallery.bridgesmathart.org/.

Introduction

At the conference, there will be 1500 square feet of space in the exhibit hall for an exhibition of 2D and 3D mathematical art, ranging from computer graphics to quilts to geometrical sculptures. Due to space constraints, flat works will be limited in size to 24" x 36" (including frame), and 3-D works will be limited to 18" x 18" x 18". Images of accepted artworks will also be published in a print catalog and archived on a web site chronicling the exhibition.

If you would like to submit your work, please follow the instructions below. Nonconforming submissions will not be entered into the review process.

Review Criteria and Scoring

The exhibit space will only accommodate a limited number of works, which may necessitate rejecting some good quality pieces. Review criteria include:
* Math content (This is a mathematically sophisticated audience.)
* Esthetic appeal (This is admittedly highly subjective.)
* Medium (A variety of media will make for a more dynamic exhibit.)
* Craftsmanship (The level of skill and effort that goes into making an effective presentation of the idea.)
* Innovation and originality (Pushing mathematical art in new directions.)

Expectations

Artists are strongly encouraged to register as an "art exhibitor" and attend the exhibits. Registration for an art exhibitor is free. If for some reason, you are not able to attend, you will be responsible for shipping your artwork to the meeting at your expense. Return shipping will be covered by the meeting, but only within the U.S. Artists wishing to receive an exhibit registration and/or reserve a hotel room should e-mail their request to Christine Davis at "cpd at ams.org". Artists should contact Christine only after being notified that they have accepted artworks and before December 1. Artists who are mathematicians and want to attend the meeting are expected to register for the meeting and should register separately for it on the meeting website. Note that there will also be a paper session at the meeting on connections between mathematics and the arts, organized by Douglas Norton.

Please note that the works should be presented in a manner that would be appropriate for a mainstream art gallery. This is to be contrasted to a poster session or technical illustration look, which most mathematicians are more accustomed to. For examples of the sort of works that are appropriate, see the "recent art exhibits from the Bridges Conference and Joint Mathematics Meetings":http://bridgesmathart.org/bridges-galleries/art-exhibits/.

Deadlines

Submissions must be completed between *September 15, 2012 and October 15, 2012*. Notification of acceptance will be made via e-mail by *November 15, 2012*. All submitting artists should receive an e-mail by November 15 regardless of whether or not they have accepted works.

Requirements and Submission Process

All submissions must be made online using the submissions website: http://gallery.bridgesmathart.org/. All artists must have an account on this website in order to submit to the 2013 JMM. If you already have an account from previous exhibitions (Bridges 2010-2012 or JMM 2011-2012), click "Log In". If you don't have an account, click "Create a new account" and provide a username, valid email address, and password. Once you create your account, you will be automatically logged in and can create your submission.

To create a submission, log in to the website and click "Add Submission", and fill out the form. Note that required fields will be marked with an asterisk (*). When you are finished, click Save. You can go back and edit your submission at any time up until the submission deadline by clicking "My Submission".

Image Requirements

You may submit 1 to 3 artworks. In the event the jury is forced to choose, due to space limitations, among submissions that received comparable jurors' scores, artworks will be selected in the order in which they appear. You may wish to consider this when ordering your artworks.

Images should be JPEG files with a dimension of 1800 pixels in the larger direction, RGB format, saved with maximum quality.

Upon Acceptance and Delivery

Please note that all the artworks should be hand delivered to the art exhibit area of the exhibit hall by *3 pm on January 8, 2013*. The participants are also responsible for picking up their works at the end of the conference and will be expected to assist in set-up and tear-down of the art exhibition as needed. The artworks will not be insured while on display, so the artist assumes all risk for damage or theft. The conference will provide security for all exhibits.

Questions

Questions related to the art exhibit or to the use of this website should be addressed by e-mail to artsubmissions at bridgesmathart.org.
