[SSDC-Safety] Lithium battery safety

Hi teams,


In response to a number of lithium battery incidents, the safety office is looking into improving how these batteries are used, stored and disposed of. For now they have requested that the SDC takes inventory of all lithium cells / batteries and disposes of any surplus or damaged items.


The following is required of all teams that have any lithium batteries or cells.

Disposal

1) Go through your bays and set aside all batteries that are damaged or not being used for current projects.

2) If you can safely discharge the batteries then do so. If you are unsure if it is safe or if the batteries / cells are damaged then record the voltage.

3) Tape terminals and package all of the same batteries together. Use a zip lock plastic bag or box.

4) Place a chemical waste on each package for disposal and make sure you state the type of lithium cell. Print the safety data sheets for each type of cell.

5) Email me to arrange pickup.


Create a lithium battery/ cell inventory should include the following

1) Brand of battery / cell

2) Type of battery /cell

3) Cell design (cylindrical, pouch, etc)

4) Date of purchase

5) Number of batteries / cells


At this stage it is not necessary to add power tool or laptop batteries.


Please make an effort to gather all batteries for disposal and contact me before November 22nd.

All battery inventories should be created by December 6th.
