Thanks to Lawrence and Dani who reached out about this.
I have solved the issue – not be finding a thunderbolt 3/2 adapter but by finding a really good use for it on a mac mini (that is being used for graphics) that has a thunderbolt 2 port. So all is now good.

Pretty sure the adapter works. I've got a space grey and a display on my bench.

Does anyone have one that I can borrow for a day (or less)? We had one but I cant find it. I rarely need to connect new macs to old thunderbolt 2 devices but I have received an Apple Thunderbolt Display. I
would like to see if it works before getting another adapter (which we now rarely need)?
