The workaround for machines already stuck at the black screen with white Apple logo with the progress bar stuck between 30-50% is as follows

 

Boot to single user mode holding down (command)⌘s 

 

At prompt type ‘mount –uw /‘

 

/usr/bin/vi /etc/rc.server

 

Type i for insert

#!/bin/sh

/usr/sbin/BootCacheControl jettison

Escape key

:wq

 

You will receive an error message re $HOME it is safe to ignore

At prompt type ‘reboot'

Subject: [MacTUG] Yosemite progress bar freezing...

This is a long and interesting thread on an issue that plagues some Yosemite macs using AD. (It appears it has been resolved in 10.10.3 but I have not updated the labs to this yet).

The long and short of it is that BootCache.playlist is an issue and that starting in safe mode cleans out the caches so that when you restart (out of safe mode) things are fine. There are some suggestions to write scripts to deal with this but I may just explore upgrading to 10.10.3 and see if it resolves the issue
