Hi everyone,

We have another Woman in Mathematics Colloquium coming up.
I strongly encourage everyone, especially students, to take these
opportunities to learn about the great research done by women and gender
minorities in mathematics and have a chance to talk to them afterwards.

*Women in Mathematics Winter Colloquium 2023*

Join WiM on February 28, 2023, for a 45 Minute talk with Professor Matilde
Lalín from University of Montreal followed by a *Q&A session and
refreshments*.

Time and Date: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2023, *1:30 PM - 2:30* PM EST
Location: MC 5501

*Speaker:* Professor Matilde Lalín, University of Montreal

*Title:* A moment with L-functions

*Abstract*:
The Riemann zeta function plays a central role in our understanding of
prime numbers. In this talk, we will review some of its amazing properties
as well as properties of other similar functions, the Dirichlet
L-functions. We will then see how the method of moments can help us in the
study of L-functions and some surprising properties of their values.
Finally, we will present some recent results about L-functions associated
with cubic characters.

*Biography: *

Matilde Lalín received her PhD in 2005 from the University of Texas at
Austin and is currently a professor at the Université de Montréal and the
Vice-President Quebec of the CMS. She is involved with several initiatives
whose aim is to encourage the participation of women and members of
underrepresented groups in mathematics, including the Committees for Women
in Mathematics of the CMS and of the IMU and the Women in Numbers Network.
Her research interests lie in Number Theory and related areas and they
include L-functions, Mahler measure, and arithmetic statistics over
function fields, and she has written more than 60 articles on these topics.
She received the *2022 Krieger-Nelson prize* from the CMS and has been
recently named *Fellow of both the AMS and the CMS*.

This event is open to all students, faculty and other members of the
faculty of mathematics and their friends.
