We are reaching out to invite you to form a team to participate in the 2020 McGill International Portfolio Challenge (MIPC) which this year is held in VIRTUAL FORMAT — the world’s premier university buy-side finance challenge on portfolio construction and pension investing, open to students of all faculties (mipc.ca<http://mipc.ca/>

). Topic for 2020 competition -- Protectionism and Social Inequalities.

The MIPC has cash prize rewards of C$50,000, a figure that makes this competition one of the most lucrative university competitions in the world. A C$25,000 prize will be awarded to the winning team and an additional C$25,000 in prize money will be shared amongst the other finalists.

MIPC is encouraging the best and brightest students from across the globe to compete and submit solutions to the 2020 MIPC, which will take place this fall. The case will be released in September 2020, submissions are due on September 30th, 2020, and then the top 25 teams will be officially invited to compete online for the final round of the challenge. (Sorry, no trip to Montreal this year!)

Team forming and registration: If you are interested, please form a team of 4 students, select a team leader, who then emails us: 1) first and last names; 2) Program and term; student ID; and 1 page CV for each team member – all in ONE email. We encourage you to take advantage of the early bird registration and secure a spot in this year’s competition.
Early bird registration is open now and the registration fee is C$100/team, a 50% discount from the standard registration fee. Please note that early bird registration ends on July 31st, 2020 (after that, registration fee is $200 per a team).

Virtual competition format: Once the case is released in early September 2020, self-formed and registered teams will submit their cases – instructions are published on the competition website https://mipc.ca/mipc-2020/

Please note that Math Business and Accounting will financially support only one team ($100 CAD registration fee) IF a team gets selected after first round to “virtually participate” in the semi-final round.

If there more than one team is formed, students are free to register on their own as a team and participate. Again, we will financially support only one team (preferably from upper year students); if there is more than one team from the University of Waterloo is selected to participate, Math Business might be able to consider reimbursing 2nd team’s $100 registration fee – if selected to the semi-final round. Please also note that the $100 registration fee is the only expense that is required as last years’ “participation fee in Montreal” has been canceled due to virtual format.

Students should choose someone to be a team leader who will be in contact with Marcia Taylor (mathbus at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:mathbus at uwaterloo.ca>) or Dr. Elshan Alekberov (ealekberov at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:ealekberov at uwaterloo.ca>) throughout the team forming and registration process. Please refrain multiple people emailing and leave that task to your team leader to communicate with us. The competition site is very well organized and you can find all answers to your question.

If you still have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Marcia Taylor at mathbus at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:mathbus at uwaterloo.ca> or Dr. Elshan Alekberov at ealekberov at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:ealekberov at uwaterloo.ca>.

Thank you,
Math Business and Accounting
